In recreational soccer you shouldn't worry much about soccer positions until age 8 or 9. However, I think it is important to teach the "concept" of offense and defense starting at U6. What I mean is to teach that there are soccer "attackers" and "defenders". I see no benefit to teaching "herd ball" as the way to play soccer.
